I’ve been into flight simulation for about 3 years now. Let me tell you – I love it and I hate it. Well, my wife probably hates it more!
You see, I’ve bought so many addons and flight simulation downloads that it could make your head spin. Everything from controls to modifications to software.
There are seriously less than a handful of flight simulation downloads I’d even THINK about suggesting to a friend!
I guess I can’t really blame the software creators. Technology is only just now catching up to what we’re looking for. With new maps programs and this crazy thing Microsoft is doing called Photosynth, it’s no wonder our needs haven’t been met.
I did find this one program though that I really did like. It’s called Flight Pro Sim. It’s got a ton of features… 20,000 airports. Over 100 aircraft. It’s really pretty amazing.
For sanity’s sake, I’m going to review my second choice too. That’s Microsoft’s Flight Simulator X Deluxe. It’s not a close second but a second nonetheless.

Flight Pro Sim Review
Flight Pro Sim is definitely my first pick. I’ll tell you a few of my thoughts about it…
Initial impressions:
First of all, I was hesitant to even by the software. I had looked at the sales page about 4 times and thought “next pay day.” Well, I finally cracked down and bought it.
The first time I logged in, I downloaded the software in the members area. Quite frankly it contained what a lot of other flight simulator software companies sell as their full suite for hundreds of hundred dollars.
The simulator itself was very straight forward, and installed quickly. I tried the extra add-on packs and they also installed easily.
It was now time to test out the actual flight simulator. It started and I went over the amazing selection of planes. Far more than I thought, then I chose the take-off location and off I went.
The first thing that blew me away was the realistic controls. I had a go at flying a Cessna and was surprised as to the level of detail that has gone into this simulator. Unlike an arcade game, it actually took some time to master the controls and get into the air. I already knew this would be a keeper.
Actual in flight experiences
The details of Flight Pro Sim are pretty amazing.
Once air borne I was surprised again as to the level of detail as I flew close to the ground I had trees, sheep, a bridge and then the buildings came hurtling towards me. I tested it out further and went higher. Soon I was up in the clouds and blinded by the sun, literally….
After a couple of flight hours, I managed to get the hang of most of the basic skills. I was addicted and soon I was looping through the 3D clouds..
To really test it out I loaded the extra addon scenery packs to see if I could fly anywhere as they claimed…. and soon I was over the Effiel tower. I tried again and did the amazing Grand Canyon Tour, then again from Israel to Jordan and over the Dead Sea.
This software is very comprehensive, the controls even look and feel realistic. The wind direction matters and even the slope of the runway!
The drawbacks:
Unfortunately, you will get addicted to this flight simulation game. I know I did. Nothing crazy like I lost my marriage or my kids divorced me – but I definitely lost some sleep! The scenery and some of the places I visited were just so amazing…

Microsoft Flight Simulator X Software
Microsoft’s Flight Simulator Download is definitely my second choice. I remember buying it because it had the Microsoft name – I mean really how bad could it be?
Well, before long I gave up on it. It didn’t have the detail that I hoped it did. A felt somehow restricted (which is the exact opposite feeling you’re looking for in flight simulator software!
